How much to ship to Japan?

My best friend lives in Japan (Tokyo) and I want to get him something that weighs about 50 pounds, but I want to estimate how much the shipping will be to see if it's in my budget.

Check out the rates at usps.com. They generally have much better rates than Fedex or anyone else, especially for that weight. What you really need to be careful about is the size of the package as they won't ship large boxes(like a computer size).

DHL is also good for international shipping. Don't forget that customs can be a bear.

I didn't think about customs. I wanted to get a messaging chair. If I can find it online do you think that would be easier? How do you find out customs guidelines?

All the shipping sites should have customs information for the particular country. I've done extensive shipping to Europe and everything was related to the value of the item(s) being shipped. Saying its a gift means nothing to customs people, at least in Eastern Europe. If you are shipping a chair then you really need to know how large the item is. I looked into shipping a desktop computer to Europe and it would have been somewhere in the area of $600-$700 given the size of the package(DHL/Fedex) and I imagine the chair might be larger. Definitely look into getting it online from a Japanese retailer.

Yeah - maybe a gift card would be better :)

Or maybe you can find it online and see if it's cheaper just to ship it that way...

It would be much easier for you if you buy it online and have it shipped direct to your friend. You may even be able to buy it from a Japanese company so you don't have to worry about extra shipping, customs, etc..
