Several Trails of Tears. Government lies, and poor men of character. They were fed empty promises, and made to move from there land. Then to top it off, then they make mount Rushmore, in their sacred mountains, then atomic testing on there land. Several atrocities brought them to these reservations. This is why a lot of them suffer alcoholism and crime, we have created more ghettos, in the U.S than anywhere else in the world. Sad deal, however some good men, are trying to do something, while the rest of the world, looks in disbelief.

The alcholism is caused by their adaption to a low sugar diet. The indian metabolizes the alcohol rapidly causing a severe craving in the brain.

Yes they can leave if they want to.
Some like living on the reservation while others detest the stigma.
LIke many young people kids leave their home to see what is on the other side. And like everyone else some find what they had is what they long for.
Leaving to join the military is common as is going to college. From there some joing the corporate rat race while others return to the definitly slower pace of their families tribe.

In our ignorance building this nation, we have failed to assimilate the native dwellers into our society. Add that to the fact that these native dwellers refused to accept that progress was moving toward them and you have a confrontation waiting to explode. At one time native American Indians were relegated to reservations until the 1930's when oil was discovered on reservations along with mineral deposits and the like. We did screw out heads on straight and allowed them their freedom but the Indian emulated the white man and kept the money among select people in the tribe and left the rest in the dirt. Today, Indian casinos are providing for the tribes and many still like the regiment style of tribal life but like anyone else in the country they are free to go and come as they like.

Thanks for all the answers. It helped clarify a portion of the question but I'm not sure I understand who created the reservations. What was the purpose of the reservation?

Okay, I got you. It is a long story, however I know what you are saying. The Union Army continued to push the Native Americans onto the reservations because the Native peoples were labeled hostile threats. I believe it was the year 1838 when the U.S government pushed the five as they termed "civilized tribes" onto the reservations because they were a threat to peace. At least that is what the U.S government so declared. This would be the trail of tears.

Territory we wanted was another driving factor. We continued giving the Native Americans lands, in which we deemed uninhabitable. However as America grew the U.S government figured we needed those lands as well. We would promise them land, then we would expand, and take it away. Eventually we pushed them onto lands that no one else wanted.

As for the rest of the Native American lands, we dropped atomic, and H bombs on. Many famous General were Indian hunters and killers such as Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson enforced, and most likely created the "Indian Removal Act" of 1830. He was notorious for fighting the Native Americans, and destroying, annihilating, decimating and relocating them. It was also a prestige thing, fight the local savages and kill them, for power they figured they did it I guess. America has always loved there generals, might as well keep a war going on somewhere, I figure.

The term reservation comes out around 1789 and two years later, they roll the meaning of the word reservation into the first Indian Reservation. It was the first Congress of the United States under the new Constitution stipulated, that the Iroquois would live on the first Reservation. It consisted of the six nations, also the Iroquois nation, I believe it was located in the territory of New York.
