Auschwitz and Auschwitz-Birkenau were liberated on January 27, 1945 by the 322nd Rifle Division of the 60th Russian Army. Most of the surviving prisoners (around 60,000) at Auschwitz were forced on a death march to Bergen Belsen; some 20,000 made it. There were only around 7,500 remaining prisoners still alive at Auschwitz when the Russian Army arrived.
