I believe that your dreams can help you figure out what is going on in your life, in a non-logical manner. it can help guide you to problems that you are having and solutions to them.

I've never done any work in it, just things I noticed from my own life.

but it does come down to what you believe in it. If you believe you can learn something from dream analysis, you will. if you don't believe you can learn anything, you won't.

I think I'm going to answer this quesiton using some personal experience as the backdrop. While I think that not all dreams are meant to have significance I also believe that some do. I think dreaming is complex in many ways, some believe its just a random firing of neurons in our brain which scientifically makes the most sense.

but I also believe that while we are in this state we have the ability to pick up on things we normally wouldn't. Perhaps even communicate with others that have past on, or warning about future events. I also think people tend to be able to trouble shoot and come up with ideas while dreaming. I've read several books on the topic of dreaming and I remember this one part where they did an experiment to find out if people were shown anagrams and asked to think about it in their sleep. The study concluded that the process of dreaming helped people when it came to puzzle solving.

I also believe in Precognative and Prophetic dreams. The difference is basically that with precognative you dream about events that happen but can not evoke change. Like dreaming of a tornado hitting texas and the next morning you wake up and turn on the news to the headline Deady tornado's touch down in Texas. Prophetic means you dream about events that you have the power to change. You had the dream because you were meant to save someone from getting on a plane that crashes.

Sometimes I feel my dreams aren't even my own dreams. I find myself dreaming about things I've never known before. Cities in France, or the differences in New York Gangs when I've actually never really been to New York. I wondering myself if some how information and energy flows around and sometimes we catch it no matter if it is significant to us or not.

So Yes I believe dreams are more than just the scientific process. I think dream anaylis can be helpful but not all dreams are significant or mean anything. Usually dream symbols and analysis are really good at capturing what I can "general dreams".

Things like
1. Going to school or work naked
2. Having your teeth fall out
3. Falling and flying
4. Failing a test or task.

other more complicated dreams may need more work to understand, and others are just plain blatently obvious.

I have my degree in psychology, so most people would think that I believe in dream interpretation, but I actually believe that (and research indicates) that dreams are simply your brain firing in random areas of your brain and your frontal lobe trying to make sense of it by interpreting those signals and your memories into a story.

BUT I do believe that if you have a dream and have a strong emotional response to the dream, you can learn a lot from it just like you can from ink blots, hypnosis, etc. If you dream about not being able to walk, you should write it down and see how that makes you feel. Maybe you felt powerless and that's why you remember the dream so vividly and not others because you feel powerless in another situation in life. Like we remember dreams that reflect how we are really feeling, but maybe have been too busy or involved in other things to notice. I think they can be great tools for insight, but the actual physiology of dreams is much less magical in my opinion.

I've had dream like visions in the past for example; seeing my sister with a man and a baby near the mountains. I had never met her long distance boyfriend and I dreamt this before she became pregnant. When I met her boyfriend, I was shocked for he was the one in my dream.

I also on many occassions as I'm drifting almost to sleep, see pictures....almost like silent video clips of places and people whom I've never met, although the scenes are extremely detailed and it's as if I know them and are comfortable with them. Perhaps I should start writing them down. Not sure if I beleive in reincarnation...if that's what it's about or just more visions. So...I can relate to your experiences Skoolie.

My most favorite dreams are those when I am as light as a feather and have the ability to levitate off the ground and get around the room or wherever I am by floating in the air and being able to move forward by gently and slowly waving my arms (like swimming under water but no water) Ok....I know it sounds strange but this dream makes me feel happy and free and in control so I'll take it any old night!

Lastly, it's amazing how strong our subconscious mind is. I do recall one hot summer, a flying beetle bug got into the house. It landed on my bare back as I slept and my subconscious told me exactly what it was that was on me with the ickly prickly little legs. I woke up and felt my back and sure enough....bleah! it was a flying beetle on me. My spouse laughed and thought that I was just dreaming but the evidence was there. My subconscious was working overtime!

So...my answer to the question is yes, I do beleive in dream interpretation although it depends in what context the dream is. Is it our mind dealing with life's stresses and challenges to help us to find the solution? Is it a vision? Or an on the spot subconscious message?

Dreams can be caused by any number of factors like the food you ate for supper, the movie you watched on television, the singing of the birds outside your window, stress at work, goals you have in life, looking at Skoolie's photo, reading an exciting book, the temperature in your bedroom, etc. In fact, there are so many influences on what we dream that any attempt to attribute meaning to the dreams is pure speculation. Interpreting dreams is much the same as astrology. You can always find some way to relate a dream or an astrological sign to something you want, have or did if you use your imagination. What most people fail to recognize is that they aren't even experiencing their own dreams. They're probably experiencing spillover from other peoples' dreams.
