Good question.
Many people think that it has to do with the Jewish roots considering what animals are considered clean and unclean, but in fact the biblical roots of not eating meat on Fridays (it used to be wednesdays and fridays) goes back the letters that Paul wrote to the church in Corenthia.
Back in the first century, meat was considered a luxury because it was expensive to purchase and expensive to ranch. So according to Paul abstaining from this luxury was a way to grow your spiritual health by helping you reflect on the great sacrifice Jesus made for us. The reason they chose wednesdays and fridays was because Judas denied Jesus on wednesday leading to his arrest and his crusifiction on that following friday.
Somewhere along the way catholics dropped the law on wednesdays, but kept in on fridays, but I think Eastern Orthodox churches still do both.
In recognition of the fact that Christ suffered and died, and gave up his
human flesh and life for our sins on a Friday that Catholics do not eat
fleshmeat on Fridays.
1 Corinthians is the actual letter that Paul sent to the church in Corenthia if you are interest in learning more about it.

No it's not. In the tradition they consider land animals to be "flesh meat". Very poor people could have fish because of the geography of the area (Isreal and the Holy Land) and often did because many of them were fishermen. Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, etc. was considered a luxury, so to promote their spiritual health they would abstain from the luxury of those kinds of meat to have the spirit overcome the body through depriving themselves of that luxury, in so many words. Does that make sense?
So while we are able to get a steak just as easily as a piece of salmon, in the 1st century when this tradition was started, that was not the case so it's hard to see the difference for us because we have equal access to either of them.

For some reason, people don't always equate fish to meat.
Being vegetarian I always find it funny when people say they are vegetarian think they are still vegetarian when they eat fish once or twice a week It is just funny how just how there is that link that meat means it comes from cows and pigs and things that are raised on land.

I feel that most white meats (fish & chicken OR turckey) have a low blood count, lower than red meat.
that JESUS would exept the eating of fish in particuar because most of his deciples where fishermen, he did not tell them to STOP FISHING " BUT CAST YOUR NET ON THE OTHER SIDE OF BOAT and get ready 4 a good catch"
BLOOD is a sorce of life !
