Gelcoat application

Hi. I applied a gelcoat resin today on my transom but i didn't get a smooth result - applied with a foam roller and looked good but when dried it had small places where there was no gelcoat almost like there was a bubble there then popped - but there were no bubbles in the application - is the resin to thick it is like very thick paint
