We live on a real island in the middle of a large UK town so we are part of the river community. I don't own a houseboat but many of my fiends so and often go on short trips. Two summers ago I obtained government money to be able to hire a passenger boat to take people up and down the river. It is a different life. Even if it is against your natural inclination you cannot help but slow down. Life is slower and more graceful, it is less stressful and boat people tend to be more friendly. They wave at strangers!

Many of the houseboat owners on our part of the river spend months travelling the UK canal system of which we are a part. It is part of our national and here, local heritage and we try and maintain it. Next month on the island we hold a crayfish festival in which the children catch the American signal crayfish which is endangering our own native species. Please US readers this is not a criticism. A great day out, lots of families, lots of boats, lots of beer at the local pub.

I have been on and around houseboats most of my life. I live near Lake Powell on the Colorado River in Northern AZ. There is no greater feeling of freedom and relaxation than driving a houseboat to a secluded place in your favorite lake. That being said, there is no more hopeless and depressing feeling than filling that thing with gas! They get about 1 mile per gallon if you're lucky for a small one. Renting is a good idea because then you get to drop it off when you're done and let someone else worry about slip fees and maintenance. The other route, if you end up loving it, is to buy a time share. That way you can split up these liabilities and still enjoy the boat several weeks per year.

I was invited to vacation with a group on a houseboat situated on a lake somewhere outside Little Rock, AR (can't remember where). It was the best vacation I ever had. There was no Internet, nowhere to go, nothing to do, and no itinerary. We basically floated around for a few days and did whatever moved us at the moment. I took off my watch and completely lost track of time because it simply didn't matter anymore. I napped a lot, read a lot, played games, cooked and ate (and drank), swam, did whatever I wanted. Neither the lake nor the boat were the focus. Rather, it was simply about being, which is to say, being completely removed from needs and stress and information and everything that presses on us in daily life. I would recommend it as one of the best vacation options to consider, but I wouldn't say the destination or accommodations really matter much. It matters more to choose people you like being around and unplugging from everything for a few days.
