How do i get my dog not to be (gun shy)

I have a pit bull and she is 3 years old she listens to verble commands and hand commands nedless to say for a pitbull she is very smart i want to take her hunting to retrive rabbits and find them, i was told to get her not to be afraid of gun shots to take her out and tie her to a fence walk about 50 yards and shoot a couple of shells and slowly come in closer after about 3 shots she was scared witless and now if she even sees a gun she runs and hides from me what can i do to fix the problme, also when i take her out just to track them when she finds them she starts to chse without a command and wont stop till she kills it or gives up and i spend hours trying to retrieve her if i could get any ideas on how to train her to be a help and not a burden when i take her out i would be extreamly thankfull

The last thing in this world you want to do is feed any aggressive behaviour teach any killing sport to a non aggressive pit bull once it is turned on You wont be able to turn it off you will ruin a good dog with an ending of your dog having to be destroyed or turning on you and / or your family A PIT IS NOT A HUNTING DOG ===STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING IT WILL BACKFIRE ON YOU

The fence thing you did wont help...Dogs are instinctive, meaning he probably thinks he's helpless when he hears gunshots...You have to train your dog for the specific tasks you want it to do if the breed wasnt bred for the task you are asking. Beginning the training at a young age is the best method, as later it will be a bit more difficult. He needs to go out with you numerous times. You dont shoot to get him used to it, shoot when you have to, and calm him down and tell him its okay. You have to be repetitious with dogs, after a while he will get it, but forcing him too rarely helps.
