Patent for a modification to an existing invention?

Can I obtain a patent for a modification to an existing invention, which has been around for many many years, and how do I do that, if it possible? How much money do I need to purchase the patent? How long will it take for the entire process of obtaining a patent?

Yes you can obtain a patent for an existing invention as long as you can show that it makes some type of improvement to the invention. I would consult with a patent attorney about this making sure they sing a confindential agreement so your idea will not be stolen. Depending on the modifying you want to do will probable determine the cost. Sometimes the govenment set cost so a person will not get taken for their life savings.
