Quarterback for NFL football - what's with the new green dot?

I'm watching the Monday Night Football game (Denver Broncos vs. Tennessee Titans) and i notice a gree dot on the back of the helmet for both quarterbacks. This dot was not there last year. Obviously only quarterbacks have this dot but what is the reason or pupose for this?

Yes, i have seen that same green dot as well, i think it has to do something with the microphone -- he is the only player wired in.

The green dot is the result of a new rule - a green dot helmet indicates that the helmet is wired with a radio for calling in plays to the quarterback.

A new rule in the NFL that took affect in the 2007 season states that only two players on the feild can wear a two way communication device to communicate with the coaching staff. One on offence, and one on Defence. They are for play calling purposes only. Generaly the Quarterback, and the Middle Linebacker wear them. Any player can still be "Miked up" for entertainment purposes through the Media.

So you are saying only "two-way" communication. Any other player can be wired up for one-way?

I didn't' realize that their radios were 2 way, I always thought they were just one way communication.

They are not 2-way yet. Only one-way communication is allowed on the field. Players can only "hear" coaches.

That indicates that the person wearing that helmet has a radio for coaching staff to send in calls etc
