1099

Last Dec. our house burned the insurance paid us 108000.00 to rebuild our home the contractor that we hire did not complete the job and we bought many of the materials and did a lot of the work ourselves. There for the contractor did not get all the insurance money there was about 39000.00 that we spent on materials (roofing, siding guttering, kitchen cabinets.....) since the contract did-not get all the insurance money he has sent my husband a 1099 for self employment which is the difference in what the insurance money was and what he received. He never paid my husband any money and all of the difference went to rebuilding the house which we have receipts for. What do we need to do ?

So...

the money from the insurance company went to the contractor.

you didn't use the contractor for everything and thus didn't work enough to earn it all.

you did some yourself

so the 1099 you got was saying that you earned this money from the contractor for what was left?
