Will I have to pay taxes on this amount?

Filed bankruptcy 2004; discharged 2005. Jan 2008 I received a 1099 from a credit card company that was included in the bankruptcy. Can the other credit card companies send me 1099s next year?

Actually yes. This is something a ton of people get stuck on that they do not know. If you were relieved of more than $600 (that is you settle for $600 or more than the original amount) then you will owe taxes on that money.

So for instance, if your balance was $1000 and you settled for $800, the difference is only $200 and that credit card won't send you a 1099, but if your balance was $1000 and you settled for $200, then the difference is $800 so you will owe taxes on that amount.

It's such a little known fact that many people get screwed on this. Good luck.

Take your taxes to an accountant, along with your bankruptcy paperwork. There is usually some type of insolvency forms that can be filed.
