2008 Rebate Checks

I just want this explained in normal people terms. Say I usually receive a refund of 3000.00. I have calculated that I would receive 1800.00 for the 2008 rebate check. Say nothing changes next year when I file, will my refund next year be 1200.00 or would it still be the 3000.00? Does the 1800.00 get deducted from you normal refund or is this on top of the normal refund I would get. I guess what I am asking is would by refund next year be 4800.00 minus 1800.00 or 3000.00 minus 1800.00?

It sounds like you made enough money that you paid more then $1200 or so in federal taxes correct?

if you are single you will get $600
if you are married you will get $1200 for the two of you
for ever child age 17 and under you will get an additional $300

so if you are married and have 2 kids under the age of 17, that will be a $1800 rebate check.

note: you will only get as much back as you paid in federal taxes, so if you were to get a 1800 check, you'd had to have paid 1800 in federal taxes in 2007. and the child thing is depending on who you claimed on 2007 taxes.

note: if you made more then $75,000 single or $150,000 married, you will lose $50 of rebate money for every $1000 you are over. so if you were single making $87k you wouldn't get a rebate check.

I am married and have 2 children under the age of 17. I paid in over 5000.00 in taxes last year on a combined income with my husband of 55000.00. My refund is in the 3000.00 range. I want to know if everything stays the same(same income, same amount of children, same deductions and so on) will my check that I receive from the IRS next year be 3000.00 like this year of 1200.00(3000-1800)? Everyone is beating around the bush about how this really works. I just want then nuts and bolts. I understand the all the requirement. I just want to know how this is going to affect my next years refund. I use my refund for certain things each year so I need to see if I need to hold this money back for that or if I can use it for extra stuff.

The $1800 check you are going to get has NOTHING to do with your 2008 taxes, it is not an advancement on your taxes from 2008 and it is nothing that you will have to pay back.

it is free money that they are giving you, in hopes you spend it on goods to help jump start the economy.

so if you income and deductions stay the same, you will also get $3,000 back next april as well. Along with the $1800 check in May (or whenever they send it)
