If there is not a beneficiary on a 401k account,can we receive anything from that account?

My step-kids father passed away. He did not put a benefiaiary on the account. If they prove that they are his children, can they receive hi 401k?

When there is no beneficiary, and no spouse, (with 401k's it automatically goes to the spouse unless they signed off on it) It will go to the estate of the deceased.
