Deductions for volunteering for national study?

I volunteered for an NIH sponsored medical study. There were no medical charges to me, but I had to pay for the transportation there (flight, car)
and lodging (hotel). It was not a medical necessity, but I got the results
for use by any of my doctors, as were collected in the study.

My percentage of medical cost is too low to take a medical deduction so medical deductions are out. But does anything like volunteering for a study like this count for charitable work or some other kind of deduction, since transportation and lodging counts for any other voluntary tax deductible organization.
