Claiming a dependant

My husband lost a job in December 2007. He has not being able to find a job as of today.
My question is: Can I claim him as a dependent when I file tax next year even if (hopefully) he finds a job tomorrow, or does he have to be out of work until the end of the year?

No, dependents actually don't work that way. Sorry to hear about your husband I know how stressful that can be. Your spouse can never be your dependent. A dependent is either a child under the age of 18 (24 if a full-time student) or a completely disabled relative.

For spouse, you file married filing joint which does give you a huge benefit over other filing status. Are you working now? You can claim another exemption or two to get more money out of your paycheck until he is able to find a job...

Thank you so much. Yes, fortunately I am working. This has been a very stressfrul experience for both of us, but especially for my husband becaue he's been working since 16 yrs old and he is now 34.
Thanks Again!
