Earnings

This past year my husband and I started a new business, sort of because we did not apply for an ID business number. We received commissions from sales, which we have received a W-2 for. Do we file this separate, as a small business, along with our regular filing, or do we add what we earned in commissions to our total income?

Were the w-2's issed to you personally with your SSN number? if they were, they will be reported to the IRS as personal income that you earned as an individual. plus you would have had taxes taken out.

if you want to make it a small business, you will need to get an EIN ID and change your tax information with the company over to that instead of your SSN. then next year you could file it as a small business (and take all those tax advantages if they apply to you)
