I think they want a Tax Identification Number (TIN), which might be your SSN, although most businesses have their own separate number, so that they can better identify the expense in their records. If they were tax exempt (which doesn't seem likely from your story), this might be important for them. Generally, they are entitled to this information, but they do seem like a-holes, don't they. I think they have no right to not pay you, but you have no right not to give them the TIN. You could probably make your supermarket give you their TIN too, but what would you do with it?
