42" plasma--720p enough or would 1080p be better?

I'm told that on the smaller screen sizes, the 720p is sufficient. I want my next purchase to last past the time when the stations begin broadcasting in 1080p. A salesman told me the only way to tell is to compare the pictures with the tv's hooked up to blue-ray. I don't have access. Any ideas? I'm looking into the Panasonic TH-42PX80U, T42PZ80U and TH-42-PZ85U.

You need to buy the 1080P. The main reason is that the high definition DVD player wars are over and Blu-Ray is the winner. As more and more Blu-Ray videos become available, people are discovering that Blu-Ray does not work on a 720P resolution TV.

Whenever you purchase a new electronic device, ALWAYS buy the best you can with the money you have available.

I agree, you would need to hook them up to a bluray drive to see a difference.

at 42 inches, I'd get the 1080p. it will be worth the extra money. especially once you get a bluray drive
