Xp is just a version of windows. No, you can't separate them as XP is just the version.

If you are talking about Windows ME and Windows XP they are two separate operating systems

you can have one or the other. not both. and installing either would really require a full install and not a upgrade or a downgrade since they are totally different architecture.

Hi Mam359
obviously you have both ME and XP on your computer , so both of the above answers are incorrect,

To techie : you can most certaily upgrade and down grade without a full install and not lose any of your files and you can have both ME and XP on your computer ,obviously mam359 has both elsehe wouldnot have ask the question

To Mtnrescue : i hope you know more about the mountains & rescue than you do about computer
Sorry for the come back Guys but you shouldn't give advice if you dont know what your talking about.

Your first step is to backup your entire system, in case something goes wrong. Next, open control panel from within Windows XP. Choose System, then the Advanced Tab. Click the "Settings" button under the "Startup and Recovery" options. Make sure XP is selected as the default operating system and not Windows ME. Click the Edit button to open the Boot.ini file in NotePad, and remove the line containing Windows ME from [operating systems] section. Save the file. Assuming Windows ME is on Drive C: and Windows XP is on another drive, delete all of the files and folders on C: EXCEPT the following:

1. boot.ini
2. io.sys
3. ntbootdd.sys
4. ntdetect.com
5. ntldr
6. bootsect.dos (optional)
7. autoexec.bat (optional)
8. config.sys (optional)
9. msdos.sys (optional)

DO NOT FORMAT THE DRIVE, or you will lose all of these files and your ability to boot to Windows XP. You can however, convert the drive to NTFS after you have rebooted and confirmed that XP boots fine.

This was the best answer because, as stated in the response, the other two individuals didn't actually have an answer. One didn't seem to even pick up on the subtle hint that I have both operating systems installed and would like to remove one, nor did they posess the technical prowess to supply the correct information. In my infinite ignorance, I can only trust this to be the correct answer. If it is not, then we both may need to apologize to the previous respondents. I'd bet that it is correct. Thank you for your assistance.

When windows ME first came out I used it, and when I loaded it, I found that it comes with an uninstall option, reverting your system back to your previous OS. But since ME was meant to be an upgrade from 98, (it failed horribly) and not XP, it may not have this feature for you. From what I have found, rick's instructions are correct. Sorry, rick is right, you can run more than one OS on your pc, for instance, I run XP and Linux, I simply must tell my system which to boot to when I turn it on.
