Cell Phone Contracts from most of the major carriers - T-Mobile and other greedy companies!

I have a account with T-Mobile's and upon calling and attempting to cancel my service, they told me i would have to pay an early termination fee of $200. They told me my contract was not up until November 9, 2008 and if i cancel my service before that date, i will be charged an early termination fee. I asked to speak with the supervisor and he told me you agreed to the contract terms, therefore there is no way to avoid the fee.

What sucks is that all of the cell phone companies push contracts onto consumers by offering cheaper phones or packages if they agree to certain terms, including 1 and 2 year contracts. Most consumers take them up on these deals and impose outrageous termination fees in an effort to keep customers (or earn some additional pocket change), and in the end of the day, this only adds to the bottom line for these mobile carriers.

I think this sucks . . . and I think people should make a stand against these firms and their contracts. What if their service declines? What if you move to another region? What if you simply want to switch to a new carrier because of better phones or services down the road?

Let’s end the contracts!!

Makes you wonder how much they are paying their lobbyist in DC?

This is my quick rant for the day.

It is the cost of doing business.

That $200 helps cover the cost of the cheap/free phone that you got when you signed up. Also the cost of customer acquisition, and in these days, isn't cheap for the cell biz like it used to be now that everyone has a cell phone.

sadly, it is a point that very few people think about when they sign a deal to get a cool cell phone for $50 off.

There is ways around it. I use to work for a cell phone company, and had the unpleasant task of sometimes waiving the early termination fees. First make sure your state laws abide by this flaw in the contract, which lets you do this... Find a place that you know of near you, that doesn't have signal. Per-sa, a cabin or wooded area. Make sure it has no signal and you always have a dead signal. Call your company(t-mobil) and tell them that you just moved out there, and you have no signal, so your cell phone is better used for a paper weight. Keep pressuring them, and state you will contact your state representative if you have to. At most, they will send a field operator to check if the place you are telling them does or doesn't have signal, and if all goes well, you just got out of your 200 dollar per line cancellation fee. Good luck!

I couldn't agree more. I hate the contracts. We just upgraded at Christmas with Sprint and added 2 phones and line. It has been a nightmare. The 300.00 phones that we got for free died on us in 7 days. We are still trying to get replacements. Sprint store will not replace because they were an online deal. It is terrible. I am now using my 5 year old original sanyo phone and have never had a problem in 5 years.
