Actually wi -fi was just a name applied to ieee802.11b direct sequence .
wi-fi is a lot catchier and sounds better
I like to think it stands for "Wireless Fidelity" because that is like the term High Fidelity. Even though this was thrown around various institutions when the standard was being developed, it was never officially ratified to stand for anything other than a brand name.
There was some early on marketing campaigns that said that's what it stood for, but this was never confirmed by the alliance that developed the technology.
