OK, here we go, for your laptop:

Apple Mobile Device Support - iPod software

Apple Software update - more iPod software

Bonjour - Apple Service

Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 Modem - Dial up modem

Digital Line Detect - Detects digital dial up tone/signal

Microsoft Silverlight - Microsoft graphics and application enhancing software. For improving the "Web Experience"

NetWaiting - Call waiting for a dial up connection

QuickSet - Dell PC settings

Quick Time - Apple Media Player

Synaptics "POINTING" Device Driver - Synaptics manufactures your mousepad on the laptop

MSXML 4.0 SP2 - Security patches and bug fixes from Microsoft

You can pretty much can the Conexant and dial up stuff, it's kind of a waste these days.

A good program for disabling programs at startup is TrendMicro's HijackThis, msconfig is only a debugging tool to be used for short term adjustments.

Anything else you need?

Oh yeah, and I quote:

"Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences, and rich interactive applications for the Web and mobile devices."

Basically software that adapts Micosoft for use wtih third party software, applications, and devices.

Pretty much, and...

Make sure that you use Windows Update to obtain the latest patches, security updates, and Service Packs.

If you haven't upgraded to Internet Explorer 8 yet, I recommend you should.

Under Start>Control Panel>System, you can see which Service Pack you have installed, as well as other info like CPU, and installed memory. The latest is SP3.

Using HijackThis, you can disable unwanted programs that run at startup, so the laptop boots more quickly.

Under Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, you can remove other services such as telephony, MSN Explorer, and anything else you would not desire under that heading.

Also, Ccleaner is a great tool for maintaining the Windows Registry. It will delete any unnecessary Registry entries so the Desktop loads a little faster.
