For a small personal website it is not nessisary, but perhaps a good practice. Sitemaps are good for long intricate websites with lots of content.
A site map acts as an interactive table of contents. You can create your site map within dream weaver. since site maps are just links to your page information all you need to do is upload the html file that is the site map. It should link perfectly if you have the right paths for everything.
Okay interesting thing my sister asked me this same question at dinner. According to her, they ask you to have a sitemap to get search engine optomization (SEO). But she doesn't really know html, she uses a WYSIWYG. I don't consider dreamweaver a WYSIWYG although it can be if used in design mode only.
you can learn simple HTML quickly and create your own sitemap, or use a generator program, I believe google has one you can use.
In order to make a site map in a dream weaver first yoyu need to define a page as a home page, all other files will be mapped relatively to the home page.
I site view right click on a file, and define it as a home page, then go to window files (or F8), and choose a map view.

Which site map are you talking about?
Setting up a site in Dream Weaver?
Creating an HTML site map on your website for users?
Creating an XML site map to feed into http://www.google.com/webmastertools ?
or something else?
