The most important precaution is to get the best out of a phone battery, you make THE FIRST CHARGING CYCLE A VERY LONG ONE. So after plugging phone into mains with the phone switched off leave it like that for about 12 hours without switching phone on orr off nor attempting to use it during its initial charging up.

Equally important, after the completion of that 12 hour initial charge, switch phone on and start using it. BUT DO NOT put it on charge again again but carry on using it UNTIL IT EVENTUALLY SWITCHES ITSELF OFF because battery is completely drained sagain. Then plug it in, and charge it again.

From then on it will last and last and just charge it and discharge it as practicable and convenient. Probably two hours charge every few days will be sufficient and you no longer need to exhaust charge. If you do the above, you will find your battery will give you very good service for very many years before eventually i will need replacing perhaps after 8 years, although this vasries according to make and type.. But if you do not give it the first long charge and complete discharge as I advised above, your battery will wear out more quickly, and you may find it needs replacing within two years or less.

FIRST, DO NOT TURN ON YOUR PHONE UNTIL FULLY CHARGED! If you do not do this you will set the batteries internal memory so it thinks the charge in which you turned it on is the fully charged point. The only way to possibly try and fix this problem, or to fix a battery which over time has started to take less of a charge, is to let it completely die, and fully charge it, a couple times (5 if possible) this may help retrain the battery, but also batteries go bad, its part of how the cell phone companies make money, just like with laptops... my laptop only works for a few minutes unless its plugged in.

A battery, especially a low powered battery like a cell phone will show wear and tear more quickly than other batteries, simply because the amount of use and abuse it gets as we carry it around. There are a few things you can do to increase your battery life on your cell phone, however, that will ensure that it will last you through your contract.

1) Charge your battery only after it's been drained down as frequently as possible. While yes, your battery develops a charging threshold, most people don't realize that your cell phone has a threshold as well - the threshold that develops when the internal software that measures your battery life 'sticks' and tells you that you have less capacity than you really do.

2) Turn your phone off then on at least once per day. Your phone registers with several cell sites over the course of the day, especially if you find yourself travelling a long distance. Turning your phone off then on forces it to re-register with your last known cell tower, saving the battery life involved with registering with several cell sites.

3) Keep your roaming library updated (CDMA only). Updating your PRL will install the most current cell tower locations in your phone, creating less work for the phone battery as it searches cell towers.

I did write an article specifically for Verizon Wireless cell phone users, but it might be relevant to saving your cell phone battery life, located here: http://yourmonstersofmobile.com/cell_phone_carriers/verizon_wireless/e xtending_battery_life_on_your_verizon_wireless_phone.html
