It doesn't have to be flat screen to HD ready, but you do need an HD receiver. Whether you have cable, satelite, or you want to get it free from the local stations, you have to have a receiver (so much for free) If you have cable or satelite, contact your provider they will help you get set up and even send some one out to install it for you, if you just want it from the local "free" stations, you can pick up a receiver at places like Best Buy.

It isn't about if it is a flat screen or not. that is just one kind of HDTV.

What makes it HDTV is the type and quality of resolution. Is it 1080i or 1080p or 780i?

Are you concerned about being able to receive the new HDTV broadcasts next year?

If you aren't sure what the differences are in 1080i 1080p or 780i checkout this post.

Yes you will need the HD receiver from your cable or satelite company to get the HD channels.

Don't forget that the HD channels are different from the standard def channels. for example
FOX 35 is now 1135 for me. You can search with them using your remote you can call and ask your provider.

Ask your provider about the different hd packages and get one that works well for you.
