How do I find out who 'owns' an email address?

I have a couple to check on, but don't want to pay a service to do this, as my husband would see the charges on our credit card statements...Any suggestions? All the 'free' services (so far) have turned out to be that Re-Union mess, and it's a mess...just goes in a darn circle w/o actually giving any info...
