There are all sorts of things to check. Mic level, is it plugged into the right port on your PC, is the right software open to record.

Froggydart:

If you are using a Windows based computer (instructions here for Windows XP), plug in the microphone and open

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder

From here, hit the record button and speak into the microphone. If your speech is being heard, the little green line will bounce up and down. You can then stop and replay what you said. Or save the file from "File > Save".

The location is slightly different prior to Windows XP such as Windows 2000, and I have no clue on Windows Vista. However, Windows Vista listens to commands. You might want to try saying "start listening" and see if an icon in Vista pops up on screen. I've used Vista very little and am unsure of the entire process. Though it is cool in that you can assign voice commands to the computer and it will act on them. Things such as dictating speech, and even navigating menus. Instead of having to click around with Vista you can simply say "Start", then "All Programs".

Hope this helps.
