You need a video capture card on your computer, and of course, a dvd burner.

you can get a video capture device here http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatI d=1423&name=Video-Capture

The harder part is burning a dvd - you have to buy software such as Nero burning software.

You can also send your tapes away and pay to have them converted. Not cheap but much much easier.

There is a system called a Dazzle:

http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Ho me+Video/Dazzle/?dz=1

It includes a RCA to USB cable that hooks into your video camera or VCR and then connects to your computer. It comes with detailed visual instructions to make hooking them up very easy.

They have their own video editing software included with the package but once you capture the files onto your computer you can use anything. Adobe Premier Elements is the best for home videos for PC.

You will need a DVD burner on your computer in order to burn the DVDs but you will be able to do so from any recent video editing software.

The thing that is good about the dazzle is that it is plug-n-play. It's just an external wire so you won't have to open your computer and replace the graphics card which is what I did before the dazzle. Last year for Christmas I took ALL of my mom and dad's old VHS tapes and converted them to DVD's. Then I made a DVD music montage of my brother and sisters growing up. You can use audacity (a free only sounds editing program that is really easy to use) to merge songs or make them a specific length. It's really fun!
