Is storing passwords on a PDA / iPhone safe?

I want to get an iPhone and use it as a single storage place for personal files and passwords. This way it's one device that I can carry to / from work and home and everywhere else I go. Is there a safe way to store passwords and other personal information on a PDA? I'm afraid if I lose the phone - all my online accounts might be compromised. So maybe not such a smart idea. ?

Most PDAs have an option to lock automatically so they cannot be accessed without a password.

Well I guess that is assumed. I still wonder how safe it really is having such personal data on a PDA really. I've never used more than a standard cell phone - and don't want to do something foolish that could lead to identify theft or even loss of accounts.

I assume you have to lock a PDA every time you want to use it? What about a hybrid like a blackberry or iPhone - you don't want to have to unlock it every time you receive or make a call... Maybe they've thought of this and made the phone unlocked while the PDA side is password protected?

I suppose it is safe if you never lose it, leave it lying around etc.. I would personaly never store my password.
