Microsoft Word as email

If I create a word document and attach it to an e-mail, the file extension is .docx and when I send it to someone, they are not able to open it. What gives? How do I fix this?

I am trying to add one word file behind another word file creating one file. I can put the two files in one folder if required but right now they are in two separate folders.
