Cost for different packages? HD is over rated right now because there are limited HD channels available... Take DirectTV there are over 500 channels you can get, but currently only around 150+ are HD with a special box. Shop around for the programs you want by getting info on satilites and cable in your area.

If you are looking to go HD ,satellite is the way to go.Direct tv and Dishnet have lots of HD channels.Go with HD satellite receiver and HD television.Stay away from DLP and plasma.DLP tv bulbs do not last long and are expensive to replace.LCD is the best way to go in my opinion.
