I just went through this with my TV. Is it an LCD or Plasma? First try and do a reset. Unplug the TV for 5 minutes - plug it back in and see if it works.
The reset worked for mine at first, but within a week it stopped working again.
My TV is an LCD. We had to take the tv apart and replace the fuse and 2 bad capacitors from the circuit board. We fixed it for less than $15 dollars. You can get the fuse's from Radio Shack. They also carry capacitors, but not the kind we needed. I called around and finally found an electronics store that sold the right one's - that may be the hardest part for you. I was able to find out what to do and how to fix by going on to www.fixya.com. It's a site where you can post what type of tv you have and the exact problem. If you choose the free option your post will be shown to other users that can help you. I had a guy tell me exactly what part to buy and how to put them in for free!
A repair shop will want to charge you at least $400 to do this simple fix.
Good Luck!
