I use a linksys that runs at the 54 and an Internet speed over 18000 and i run a program called network magic when i run a speed test on my network it runs faster than my Internet on my laptop which is wireless the Internet runs at 6000 so by process of elimination the wifi in the laptop is the slow down===so it sounds to me like the router is fine and the wifi card is your slow down=== if you get a faster router it probably wont make the laptop any faster===both of my computers are gateways media sys with equal processors and memory===to answer your question up grade the wifi and you may not have to do the router unless you just want to

Your P C will work with the 108 mbs router but it wont be any faster than 54mbs unless you upgrade to 108 mbs card , but then again your server probably dont put out 108 mbs
check your banwith speed on this site you will see what im talking about the 108 mbs router is
over kill , if you have cable your probably running about 5 mbs from your server .
I have a very fast P C and i only hit about 8 mbs from my cable
check yours here >> http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

The nice thing about the wireless equipment is that the newer things are made to be compatible with the older technology. It just won't necessarily operate at the faster speeds. Your wireless card and the router use the fastest common speed they have together.

That being said, most people don't have an internet connection that is faster than their 54mbps routers. A lot are still slower than the older B standard, which was at 11mbps. The jump in speed on the router, then, won't affect your browsing speeds, just data transfer speeds between computers. So, if your current router still works well, there's no need to upgrade, unless you're transferring a lot of data between computers.

Also, your wired speeds will always be faster than your wireless speeds. But it's not that noticeable of a difference when you're surfing the web.

Bottom line: unless you're doing a lot of file transfers between computers, your current router is just fine! If you want the full benefit of a new router, you'll have to probably upgrade all your hardware.
