I use both Safari and Firefox on my Mac. I uninstalled Internet Explorer because I dislike it (a lot) and I've never used Chrome.
Safari is stable on my system, but I have found its bookmarking feature impossible to navigate. Firefox does most everything I need and rarely chokes on anything. It also has all sorts of free third-party plug-ins to add features and capabilities that are not part of the basic install.
One modest advantage of using two different browsers is that I can set one to behave according to one set of parameters (pop-ups blocked, cookies unaccepted, passwords saved, etc.) while the other behaves differently. In that respect, I restrict a lot of things on Firefox and use it as my default browser. I keep Safari more open and available but use it less frequently.
I think Safari is the best browser to use on a Mac since it comes with the operating system, and there is good integration. There are times, however, when Safari does keep crashing due to a bug or glitch. Try checking for an update for Safari under "Software Update". If there is one, install it, and check performance. If this still doesn't resolve the issue, then you could probably try using Firefox, since it is the next best browser to use on a Mac. It has good compatibility, and should have no problem rendering webpages and content.
Personally, I don't like using Firefox on Mac OS. I prefer Safari because of its light build and quick start up time. In general, I've not found much of a problem with Safari, and hence I would also like to say that it's possible that there may be other issues with your computer. So do check them out, resolve them, and then you can continue browsing.
