What percentage of web users have QuickTime installed?

I'm trying to determine if quicktime would be an acceptable way of streaming video on a clients website. They're concerned that most PC users don't have QuickTime installed. Anybody know?

I don't know the percentage, I know I have it installed on all the computers in my home because so many web sites require it to run the site properly. I don't use it stream music or video however, I use WMP for that.

Using quicktime to do that is so 1990s and early 2000s.

I'm not sure what the % is, but a better bet is do what youtube started the craze for.

Online video streaming with flash. Flash I'm sure has a higher adoption rate then QuickTime, and it more stable and more reliable as far as how the output of the user experince is.

There is plenty of software out there to convert files into .flv and then you just need to build, or find a prebuilt solution to stream your videos through flash.

Yeah - I'm with Sid. I haven't had Quicktime installed for a couple of years. If I get a site and it requires it I'll leave the site. I don't know why, yet I believe everyone should have the latest Flash installed. I think Adobe makes it easier and faster than QuickTime does to install the right version. I remeber installing Quicktime, then going to a site and the video still wouldn't display and I think that is why I don't care for it - I'll look for the % - I'm curious too.

I have it installed at home but not at work. I would say that quicktime is a viable media for people who go to entertainment sites.

You could also offer a windows media player version to give people an option just in case they don't have it.

This article says Windows Media Player accounts for about 85% of streaming video use.

Thomas Graf, a lawyer at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, which also represents the committee, said iTunes was not a streaming video player. Microsoft’s share of total streaming video use is 85 percent, Mr. Graf said. “All of the other players have been relegated to a niche.”

So what does that make YouTube, break, metacafe and every other website using flash to deliver their video content?

Good point, hadn't thought about that.

I think the article is referring to stand alone video software, not web based.

Well my question still doesn't seem to be answered but I might go with flash. I definitely wouldn't go with Windows Media, they don't support clients that aren't running windows so mac and linux users are lucky if it works.

Here is an article stating that flash is used in 98% of all computers and devices, and that flash may soon be coming to the iPhone.
