I personal am not a big fan of iPods because of the propitiatory nature of them, and how you MUST use iTunes to load anything on them, and you can't really get music off, or share it.
The only mp3 player I have is a SanDisc Sansa, a 1 and 2 GB model, that you can drag and drop mp3s on like a thumb drive. It is nice.

Yes, there is a difference, but the real difference is that one is a Microsoft based system and the other is Apple / MacIntosh (IPod). The newer version of Zune is much more user friendly and it is an advantage to you if you are a Windows user as you more easily recongnize the interface. As with any hardware device, regardless of the operating system, there are lemons and non-lemons.
