How do you fine aquare roots if the answer is not a whole number?

If the question is something like find the aquare root of 40. well it doesnt come out cleanly so how do you do it?

There is a tree thing you can do and find numbers that will go into the number you are trying to square root, if the number is a prime number you cant break it down. then if you have a group of two same numbers then you take one of the numbers out of each group and multipy them togetherand i think thats how we did it if i remember right.
