India is a Republic, since achieving independence from Great Britain in 1947 but remaining within the British Commonwealth to present date.
Under the 1950 Constitution executive power is vested in the President who is elected for a 5 year term by an electoral college consisting of the upper and lower Houses of the legislature. The President appoints the Prime Minister. Legislative power rests with the President and two houses of parliament.
The upper house of the Indian parliament is known as the Rajya Sabba (House of the States) has 250 members serving a 6 year term, with a third of its seats being contested every 2 years.
In the lower house of the Indian parliament known as "The House of the People" (Lok Sabba) there are 545 members elected for a 5 year term representing India's States and Union Territories.The Council of Ministers is chosen by the Prime Minister and is collectively responsible to the Lok Sabba.
