Muslims were the dominant religion when India became independent from Great Britain in 1944. But with the creation of Pakistan and a huge exchange of peoples between the new countries Islam became the dominant religion of the Pakistan and Hinduism has been the dominant religion of India since then. Tension between Hindus and remaining Muslims within India remains however with terrible communal clashes berween the two Faiths. Other important minor religions in India are Sikhs and Christians.

After the Partition, Hinduism has been the most dominant religion in India. Muslims are second, with Buddhism and then Christianity coming in a very distant 4th.
