What documentation is needed if you have had metal hardware implanted into a part of your body? And, can you stillgo through metal detectors?

I recently had open reduction and internal fixation with hardware on my left fibula. I will be traveling within the U.S. in the next 5 weeks and wanted to know if my internal hardware would pose a problem and, if so, what documentation do I need to provide.

I would carry a doctor's note along with a copy of your medical history for the surgery. You can go back to the hospital where you had a surgery and fill out a record release form to get a copy.
Also, here is the number for TSA customer service if you want to double check with them.

The hospital should have provided you a card stating you have metal implantation. However, if your implantation is titanium like mine, you won't need a card because you won't set off the alarm in airports. I have almost 18 inches of titanium( from my knee to my hip) that is inside my Femur. Even that much won't set off the metal detector :))
